About the event

Audio Video Club is excited to collaborate with Soul Cinema Sundays for a Black History Month screening of Hollywood Shuffle at the historic Plaza Theatre.

As part of this collaboration, AVC will open the evening with a curated short film pre-show featuring Black and Double by Amira Barrett. The short sets the tone for the night and reflects our commitment to pairing legacy films with contemporary voices, expanding the conversation across generations.

Written, directed, and produced by Robert Townsend, Hollywood Shuffle is a landmark independent comedy that confronts the racial stereotypes Black actors have long faced in film and television. Following aspiring actor Bobby Taylor, the film blends satire, fantasy, and lived experience to challenge Hollywood’s limitations and imagine new possibilities.

The screening will be hosted by Emmy Award-winning poet Abyss and will include pre-film trivia, an 80s costume contest with prizes, and a post-screening conversation reflecting on favorite scenes and the film's cultural significance.…
